Lionel Messi is one step away from repeating the legendary record of Michel Platini to win Balon d’Or 3 times in a row. The  Barcelona striker already collected 2 trophies for 2009 and 2010, and now joined his colleague Xavi Hernandez and all-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo as the 3 finalist. Although the result won’t be announced until next January 2012, but Messi’s name is on top of the winner list.

Looking back at Messi’s achievement in year 2011, he is well deserves the trophy. He helped in contributing the Primera League title, the European Super Cup, Champions League, and the last, Spanish Supercopa.

However, another tough candidate appears, as Cristiano Ronaldo also had a fantastic personal achievement on the field. Although he failed to present trophy for Los Blancos except for Copa del Rey, he became the top score in La liga last season, with a remarkable 40 goals. Not to mention his own personal record with Real Madrid. During his nearly 3 seasons wearing ‘The Whites’ jersey, Ronaldo became the most consistent player with his name on the score sheet.

Apart from Ronaldo, Messi also has to compete with his colleague, Xavi Hernandez. Messi’s goals came mostly from a great collaboration with Xavi. As Barcelona playmaker, Xavi also has a series of records, both personal and the club. He also showed a great contribution with his national team, Spain.  In fact, Johan Cruyff believes that Xavi deserves to win this year Balon d’Or more than his other 2 competitors.

“Xavi deserves the Ballon d’Or. He may not be the best player, but he can give a lot of positive things on the field. He can help his  colleague to develope more. But it’s all depends on how you look at  football,”said Cruyff, reported by The Sun.

3 fantastic players, but only 1 who gets to win . Each of them have the same opportunity. The winner will be announced on January 9th 2012 , at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. Until then, the competition is still on.
