The UEFA Champions League title holders FC Barcelona defeated the UEFA Europa League champions Shakhtar Donetsk by a goal to nil yesterday in Monaco.

The match was played to decide who would win this year’s UEFA Super Cup, and like many expected, Barcelona went on to be victorious so as to claim their second trophy out of six possible this season. However, the encounter didn’t seem to be an easy one for the Catalans, as the match was set to go extra time, following a goalless 90 minutes.

After receiving a yellow card in injury time, Lionel Messi kept putting the pressure on his opponents late in the game, in search of a winner. Having made several deadly shots on targets in normal time, Messi was very much likely to score a goal or at least, make an assist.

Indeed, even if he couldn’t get his name on the scoring sheet, his great trough ball allowed subsitute Pedro Rodriguez to send the ball into the low corner of the net in the second half of extra time.

Shakhtar were then unable to push the game to penalties, and thus, Pep Guardiola’s boys ended their night with another cup in their hands.
