Sevilla 0-1 Barcelona: Lionel Messi Suffers Copa del Rey Exit With Barca
Barcelona saw their first exit from a football competition since September 2008, as they were defeated on away goals by Sevilla in the last-16 stage of the Copa del Rey.
Barca entered this game hoping to overturn the situation in which they were following a controversial 2-1 loss at the Camp Nou; Barcelona therefore played every single second of the game as if it was their last one, but destiny just didn’t seem to be on their side.
Lionel Messi and Iniesta proved to be at full form, firing and frightening their opponents from every angle, yet, the ball couldn’t hit the back of the net.
Messi almost made a trademark finish in the second half subsequent to a marvelous dancing-dribbling, but his shot was denied by the left post. Ibrahimovic missed a lot of chances, before his second period header was also sent away by the cross-bar.
After the hour mark, the UEFA Midfielder of the Year Xavi Hernandez finally found the target thanks to a great long-range shot, placing the Catalans ahead.
Barcelona knew this wasn’t enough, as they still had to score another goal. Nevertheless, this didn’t happen, and after the referee’s final whistle, tears began to fall.
