Lionel Messi: Winning the FIFA World Player Of The Year Award Is Very Special
The FIFpro World Player of the Year Lionel Messi received his first FIFA World Player of the Year award at the FIFA World Player Gala 2009 in Zurich, on December 21.
Lionel Messi beat runner-up Cristiano Ronaldo and former winner Ricardo Kaka, as well as team mates Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta to get the honor. The Barcelona star then declared after the football ceremony that this was a very special moment in his life, and that is was overjoyed by such a prestigious occasion.
“It is something special,” Lionel Messi was quoted saying by the press.
“I had said before that, in my opinion, the most important thing was to win at group level, at team level. But to be able to receive such a recognition, such an important prize, after being very close for two years, and to be able to finally win it at the third opportunity is very important for me.”
Lionel Messi was the Champions League’s top scorer last season with 9 goals, and he is now the first football player from Argentina to win this trophy in the history of the sport.
