Lionel Messi to skip La Liga game against Sporting Gijon

An injury was enough to keep the Argentine player Lionel Messi out from the Albicelestes game against Russia yesterday, which they won 3-2. However, with a package of interesting matches lined-up, Messi is now pushed to choose the most important games to play.

Messi is expected to travel with FC Barcelona to play for the European Super Cup which will be played on August 28, but having been called by the Argentine FA for the squad that will face Brazil in their next World Cup Qualifying match, Messi remains puzzled by the situation.

Eventually, he thought the best to do would be to play against Shakhtar Donetsk for the UEFA Super Cup and against Brazil for the next WC qualifier, so as to miss Barcelona’s opening game in the new La Liga season against Sporting Gijon.

In an interview with TyC Sports, this is what Lionel Messi said:

“On August 28 I will be at the European Super Cup, no doubt… the problem is the next match.

“Therefore, I already spoke with [Barcelona coach] Pep Guardiola and [Argentina coach] Diego Maradona to see if I can travel to Argentina immediately after the match with Shakhtar.

“Fortunately, Pep is a very intelligent person and we have a great relationship; we still have to meet and talk to see what is best for everyone.”
