Lionel Messi scores as Barcelona become European Champions
After defeating the English giants Manchester United in last night’s Champions League final, Barcelona are now the first Spanish team his football’s history to clinch a treble
Despite his team’s controversial qualification to the final, Pep Guardiola is certainly enjoying his third cup this season, as he has now made history by getting three cups, including the Champions League, in his first season.
In fact, this achievement was partly made possible thanks to a huge contribution from the argentine Lionel Messi.
The number 10 playmaker has had a wonderful time this season, having scored over 20 goals in the league, and six goals in the Copa del Rey. Lionel Messi is the current second best player in the world, but then, he could surpass the reigning Fifa Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo in the voting at the end of the year.
Before the crucial match at the Stadio Olimpico, most soccer lovers were arguing over the issue of competition between Lionel Messi and Ronaldo. Well surely, yesterday night was without doubt the decider, as these two great players came against each other.
Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t quite manage to get the help of his teammates to produce a goal, but for Messi, it was a different story all together.
As Eto’o scored a goal just after ten minutes, Messi was more relax than aggressive. In the first half, he made a shot from long distance, but his shot went over the bar. It was close though, but not extraordinary.
After moments of amazing dribbling and smooth passes, Messi decided to go forward in search of what was the second goal for his side.
In the 70’ minute, Xavi’s cross from the right hand side saw an unmarked Messi wonderfully heading the ball into Van der Saar’s net. The 22-year old player had sealed Barcelona’s win.

The game stayed this way until the end, and with this last goal, Messi now tops the Champions League goal chart with 9 goals under his belt – one more than Cristiano Ronaldo last season.
So, finally, Messi’s dream being a king of Europe has now come true… a treble, and a top scoring achievement is all he ever wanted, excluding the Fifa Player of the Year award.
His fans can just hope that this year will end up in the best way for their star.
