The Barcelona FC star Lionel Messi has been nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award, due to his work in La Liga, in the Copa del Rey, and in the UEFA Champions League with the Catalan club in 2009.
Lionel Messi helped FC Barcelona to steal the treble last season, and he also grabbed the 2009 Ballon d’Or award, the Onze d’Or award and the FIFA World Player of the Year award, among several other individual honors.
Now, Lionel Messi has been shortlisted along with 5 other athletes for the 2010 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award. Below is the list of nominees for this prize:
- Kenesisa Bekele (Ethiopian distance runner)
- Usain Bolt (2009 winner and Jamaican sprinter)
- Alberto Contador (2008 nominee and Spanish cyclist)
- Roger Federer (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 winner and Swiss tennis star)
- Lionel Messi (Argentina and FC Barcelona ace)
- Valentino Rossi (2004, 2005, 2009 nominee and Italian motor cycle racer)
The Barcelona football club itself is a nominee for the Laureus World Team of the Year award, as the club finished their 2009 year with 6 cups in their hands – again with the help of their superstar Lionel Messi.
The 2010 Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony is expected to take place at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi on March 10.
