Chelsea v Barcelona – the Catalans’ way to the Champions League Final

14 views 6 May 2009

Messi and Bosingwa, Chelsea v BarcelonaA 0-0 draw at the Camp Nou last week has certainly left Barcelona with a lot of work to do.

The might have learnt a lot from their mistakes which disabled them to score in their home, however, it’s now up to them to put in action what was acquired.

Their wonderful 6-2 win against Real Madrid at the weekend could be enough for some fans to convince themselves that the team is ready for tonight’s challenge at the Stanford Bridge, however for others, Guardiola’s boys still have to give their game against Chelsea a lot of attention, as the worst thing could be about to happen.

Generally, we are all aware of the difference that league games and Champions league matches have. Perhaps, one could explain this fact by enlightening the style of play that each country has.

In any case, it is clear that Real Madrid and Chelsea don’t have a lot in common; thus, it will be up to Barcelona to come up something new if they want cause an upset in London tonight. Surely, no one can declare the Catalans as clear favorites, for this time, the outcome of the game will based on how well they applied their tactics during the 90 minutes.

Another disappointment?

The whole of this season, Barcelona FC have been regarded as the fiercest team in Europe. Definitely, most of the respect they earn comes from their boldness in front of goal, and there is no doubt that their courage on the pitch comes from their positivism in every game.

Indeed, so far, Barcelona’s attack seems uncontrollable, as “The Trio” hasn’t stopped scoring goals, and more goals since the new season started.

Now, if one can remember, Manchester United were obviously the negative side in their Champions League clash against the current Spanish League leaders at the Camp Nou, a year ago. Nonetheless, surprisingly, they were able to contain the likes of Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto’o, and Thierry Henry; and eventually, they went on to knock them out of the competition. Indubitably, Frank Rikjaard’s Barcelona was much less productive than Guardiola’s Barca, however, this year, the beginning of the story is no different.

Chelsea is now the second consecutive club to prevent Barcelona from scoring goals at the Camp Nou in a Champions League semifinal. Therefore, one question comes to light:

Is Chelsea going to repeat the history made by Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United last year?

No one knows the answer yet, so in the meantime, the most we can do is to guess… Yet, with the Catalan army marching without looking back, the game tonight will certainly be a hard one for the Blues and their fans, as they will hope to finish what they already started.

Well, as for the Barcelona fans, they will need to remain hopeful, for one defeat at the Bridge will probably spoil their team’s season… They can still have some hope though, for even a score draw would be a golden ticket to the final at Rome.
