Barcelona wins La Liga title 2009

It didn’t take too much for Barcelona to be crowned Spanish Champions for the first time in 3 years.
Even if their 3-3 home draw with Villarreal last week wasn’t enough to give them the league title, the Catalans didn’t need another 90 minutes to get their second cup this season, as Real Madrid’s result at the weekend offered them the league trophy.
Villareal 3-2 Real Madrid: Barcelona’s present
After a shocking 6-2 home defeat against the league leaders, and a disappointing 3-0 loss away to Valencia, Real Madrid were yet to recover. They suffered another nightmare at the weekend, loosing 3-2 against Villareal, in a game where suspense was at its highest level.
Pires first opened the scoring for the Yellow Submarines trough a wonderful header in the 16th minute; and later on, Rossi had several chances to increase his side’s lead, but his control was just too poor for a second goal.
Van der Vaart then equalized for Madrid just after half-time. His easy tapping inside the goal area just escaped Lopez’s vigilance.
Villareal then regained the lead on 62 minutes; however, a clearly offside goal from Higuain leveled the score line to 2-2.
Nevertheless, Real Madrid still needed another goal to delay the celebrations from the Barcelona fans; but this third goal for the away side never came.
Instead, after series of corners, it was the home side that stilled the winner right at in the last minute to ensure that Barcelona were crowned Spanish League winners on the same night. So, Casillas has now conceded 12 goals in 3 games, and without wanting it, Real Madrid has now offered the league title to Barcelona, trough a series of defeats.
The awaited moment for Barcelona fans
Surely, this miserable story doesn’t concern any Barcelona fan. On the contrary, it brings joy to the heart, as the awaited moment has now arrived. Sunday’s game against Mallorca was therefore a match that didn’t really matter, for whatever the score was, Barcelona fans would continue their celebrations anyway.
Thus, even a 2-1 defeat at the Estadio Son Moix was nothing worrying neither for the fans nor for Pep Guardiola himself, who purposely selected a weaker side than the one we saw in action in the Copa del Rey final, last Wednesday.
Well, the party can still go on for FC Barcelona, as they have now completed the second part of a possible treble this season. The last part is still pending though, but considering the devastating form which has enabled them reach this far, it is very likely that the Champions League final will be another glorious moment for the Spanish giants.
