What was to expect? Nothing else… Today, the Barcelona star forward Lionel Messi has beaten strong contender Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid to win the Ballon d’Or 2009 award ahead of his team mates Xavi, Iniesta, and old friend Samuel Eto’o – who is now in Inter Milan.
According to several sources, Lionel Messi clinched the prestigious Ballon d’Or award by a huge 240-point record margin.
Lionel Messi helped Barcelona to steal the treble last season, as his club grabbed the La Liga title, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League trophy.
Messi was also the scorer of 23 goals in the Spanish League with 6 additional goals in Spain’s King’s Cup. The Barcelona number 10 legend then went on to finish as the Champions League’s top scorer with 9 goals, one of which was scored in his final game in Rome against Manchester United.
By winning the Ballon d’Or Award, Lionel Messi now becomes Argentina’s first football player to hold this honor in history.
While speaking to France Football, this is what Messi said:
“Honestly, I knew that I was among the favourites because Barcelona had a fruitful year in 2009, but I didn’t expect to win with such a margin. The Ballon d’Or is very important to me. All the players who won it were great players; yet some great players never won it.
“For me it is a big honor to win I dedicate it to my family. They were always present when I needed them and sometimes, they felt even stronger emotions than me.
“It won’t be easy (for FC Barcelona) to (repeat such a season) after a year like the one we just went through,” Messi continued.
“I hope the next one will reach the same standards. But to win the Ballon d’Or two years in a row is not an easy thing.”
For your information readers, the Ballon d’Or, known as the Golden Ball in English, is a French award organized by French Football magazine, which is given to Europe’s best player, through the votes of journalists accross the world.
In the end, with Lionel Messi finishing as the winner of the Ballon d’Or 2009 award, Cristiano Ronaldo, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, and Samuel Eto’o all finished in respective places from second to fifth.
