Barcelona 3-3 Villarreal – Still no champion in La Liga
Day 35 of the La Liga has ended, and yet, there still hasn’t been a winner. Barcelona could have easily been the champions at the weekend when they played against Villarreal; however, they didn’t take their chances.
Subsequent to Real Madrid’s disgracing 3-0 loss away to Valencia on Saturday night, everyone understood that 3 more points for the league leaders would have marked the end of the title race.
Unfortunately, Barcelona were only able to collect a single point from their game on Sunday evening. They drew 3-3 with Villarreal, and looking at the match, it was clear that Barcelona could have grabbed a victory for their fans.
The Catalans took the lead first, but then, the Yellow Submarines equalized. Annoyed by the defense’s lack of strength, Samuel Eto’o and Seidou Keita restored their side lead, making the score 3-1.
Controversy was then the subject of the game when the referee decided to send off Eric Abidal for a challenge he judged as “unacceptableâ€. With 10 men on the pitch, and with a hungry team struggling to get a place for next year’s Champions League, Barcelona’s back could no more contain the opposing attack.
Eventually, Barcelona allowed two more goals to enter their net, and by the time the referee blew his final whistle, the score had been leveled to 3-3.
Anyway, the Catalans can still be happy, for at least, their team was able to get a point, despite their battle against fatigue, complaisance, and pressure.
In the end, with no fireworks from the man who usually has the ability to save his side – Lionel Messi – fans now have to wait until next weekend, until they can celebrate the league title. Nonetheless, for now, what seems to be the next important thing on their list is Wednesday’s Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao.
