Barcelona 4-0 Sevilla: Lionel Messi Scores His 100th Goal And Doubles

The Argentine forward and Barcelona star Lionel Messi scored two goals at the weekend against Sevilla, as Barcelona extended their lead at the top of La Liga table to five good points.

Barcelona were disqualified from the Copa del Rey in mid-week by Sevilla, but it was a different story altogether on Saturday night.

Lionel Messi had an early appeal for a penalty on 10 minutes after Lolo seemed to have fouled him inside the box, but the referee was unconvinced. There were no goals in the first half, but still, this didn’t keep Lionel Messi from playing amazingly.

Only four minutes after the break, Barcelona got the lead thanks to an own goal from Julien Escude, who could only bang the ball into his own net following a low cross from Rafael Marquez.

Messi then attempted to double his side’s lead through a long-range shot, but the Sevilla keeper Palop was well-alerted to save the strike. Barcelona kept attacking in search of a second goal, but as Zlatan Ibrahimovic thought he had got it, the assistant referee had already raised his flag for offside.

The home side didn’t stop pressuring their visitors under the heavy rain pouring at the Camp Nou, but Palop’s quick moves were just too impressive to deny the Catalans.

Around the 70th minute though, Barcelona couldn’t take it anymore. A decent ball from Xavi pushed a fast Pedro to make the score line 2-0, before Lionel Messi also added his name on the scoring sheet in the 85th minute.

A nice pass from Dani Alves created the perfect opportunity for Messi from 10 yards out, only for the FIFA World Player of the Year to score his 100th goal for Barcelona in his club career. In added time, the crowd again erupted in joy when they saw Abidal place Messi through; of course, the Argentine knew he couldn’t spoil the party for his fans, so he scuffed the ball past a confused Palop to get his second goal of the night, and the fourth goal for Barcelona in the game.
