Barcelona 2-1 Getafe: Lionel Messi Powers Barca To Victory

Lionel Messi against GetafeSaturday night was overall a wonderful night for Lionel Messi, who scored a superb goal and made an assist in Barcelona’s 2-1 La Liga win over Getafe at home.

Lionel Messi first tried his luck from the right wing after only 4 minutes of action, but his strike went off target.

3 minutes later, there was no way the Getafe players could stop the sensational Messi from entering the headlines, as the Argentine forward sent the ball at the back of the net from over 20 yards out. An unsuccessful corner from Xavi found Yaya Toure, who gave away the ball to Messi, only for the number 10 jersey owner to stun the Madrid visitors.

Later on, Lionel Messi had two more shots on goal, but somehow, the Getafe keeper received all the balls.

Midway through the first period, Getafe finally got their feet in the game, and they made their first attack. Their assault resulted in a free-kick which was badly taken, but as the Catalans fought to regain possession, the Spanish defender Gerard Pique made an illegal challenge on Rafa, and was immediately sent off.

Watching the replay, it is undeniable that the referee’s decision was quite severe.

Regardless of this fact, Barcelona were still chasing more goals. Deep into the first 45 minutes, Lionel Messi dispossessed Derek Boateng on the flank and fed Zlatan Ibrahimovic with an intelligent pass, but the Swedish striker saw his shot cleared away by Rafa after he had beaten the goalie.

Barely 10 minutes after the hour mark, Barcelona got their second goal. Mexican player Rafael Marquez squared the ball to Lionel Messi on the counter, Messi went forward while dancing past several players before handing the ball to Xavi – who scored his second goal in La Liga from 10 yards out.

2-0 was the score line at that moment; however, the home side were again faced by danger late in the game, as Marquez received a red card.

Despite Soldado scoring from the spot for Getafe, Barcelona still managed to find a 2-1 victory to keep their 5-point lead over second place rivals Real Madrid in La Liga.
