Barcelona – between the league and the Champions League

11 views 2 May 2009

Lionel Messi’s form lately has been quite worrying for most Barcelona fans. However, there might certainly be an excuse to this sudden misadventure.

Surely, the player’s “bad moment” didn’t come at the right time. Barcelona are currently in one of the most difficult part of their season. Just as they have to prepare for the Copa Del Rey final which is only days away, they have to fight Guus Hiddink’s Chelsea, to book a place in the Champions League final.

Indeed, this is a really hard task, but what’s worse, is that they have another game which could be considered as important as their next game in the Champions League semifinals: The El Clasico.

Yes, this is not just any game… moreover; this clash is set to take place tonight at the Bernabeu Stadium.

Now, after a leg played against Chelsea during mid-week, and a league game played against Valencia last week, it is clear that the players will want a break. Therefore, when it comes to selecting a side for the next two big games, Pep Guardiola has very few options.

He couldn’t afford to reduce his chances of winning the league title on Saturday by picking a weak side; and in the same way, he couldn’t afford to risk his players’ health by giving his all in the El Clasico, without thinking of next Wednesday’s encounter against the Blues.

What to do?

In any case, the Barcelona forwards Lionel Messi and Samuel Eto’o have both made it clear that their next Champions League game was more important than the league game against Real Madrid…

Nonetheless, with the treble as his target, it is quite improbable that Guardiola will choose the European trophy over the La Liga title.

Well, there seems to be a little disadvantage there for the Catalans, however, just as everyone knows, they are always full of surprises, and they could go for the best.

No one knows what will happen next, so we just have to keep an eye on the game tonight; a game that could go either way…
